Match Report

It was a cold and windy Sunday morning, but this was not to deter MRFCboys. From the blowing of the whistle they were into their work. On the ball, they had a calmness and took up good supporting positions. Off the ball, they worked hard to compress space and close off any forward options the opponents were looking for. Given a squad of only 11, this work rate was very impressive, the question was would they pay the price in the latter stages of the game. They did not, the combination of a high possession ratio and confidence combined to leave Didcot looking more heavy legged than MRFC (a lot to be said for keeping the ball well).

The first was created ten minutes into the game, Jason running down the left channel onto a lovely through ball, popped the ball back to Aaron who then slowed it into James, who still had a lot to do, he calmly weaved inside a couple of dicot players and smashed the ball into the top corner. The midfield now took a real hold of the game and with a good drive, one of several, from Stanley, James was set up for his second. HT 2-0.

MRFC started the second half a little too confident and a refreshed Didcot worked hard and with purpose to get possession. The passing from MRFCbecame a little too short and less constructive allowing Didcot the time to get numbers around the ball much more frequently than they did in the first half.

Whilst trying to play the ball out from the back, something MRFC were doing excellently, a misplaced pass gave Didcot a chance and they took it 2-1. MRFC now had to keep the composure and as a little nervousness began to creep in. It was to be a day when nerves are just a passing leaf being blown in the Didcot wind, MRFC upped their game and started to make the kind of decisions they were making in the first half. This lead to a fortunate third goal, when a deflection from a well hit James shot deflected off the head of a defender and looped over the keeper. 3-1. MRFC were back in control and James added another in the last few minutes of the game.
